The Gift of Presence

Jesus left heaven, was carried in the womb of Mary, and born in a stable in Bethlehem. He lived on this Earth. This verse literally says He “tented” or “tabernacled” with us. It evokes a picture of the Israelite journey from Egypt into the promised land, when God resided with His people in the tabernacle. Jesus was present with us. He was fully God and fully man. Capable of feeling and experiencing all the things we do, yet, doing what we are incapable of, living a sinless perfect life. I have heard it said, that one of the greatest gifts we can give to our children is our presence. God gave His children this gift…His very presence…among us…in the person of Jesus Christ. The most perfect of gifts: unconditionally loving, unendingly faithful, and beholding the glory of God. That is the essence of Christmas…Jesus Christ in our midst…the Savior of the World!

So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.
John 1:14

  1. So true! I remember the first time I realized that the word for Jesus dwelling with us is the same as the word used for the tabernacle in the Old Testament. What a beautiful thought – God with us!
